Tracing is one of the best first drawing activities for kids. Following a line with a pencil builds hand control, focus and the shapes kids need for both drawing and writing, and it gives them a finished picture they’re proud of. Start around age 3 with simple, bold outlines, add coloring for fun, and offer blank paper alongside so kids can try their own versions.

What tracing teaches
- Pencil control. Staying on a line takes small, careful movements of the fingers and wrist.
- Hand strength and grip. Regular tracing builds the muscles kids need for writing. See fine motor activities with tracing.
- Visual tracking. Eyes and hand learn to work together.
- Shape knowledge. Kids feel how a drawing is built: a circle here, a curve there.
- Patience. Slowing down is a skill, and tracing practices it.
- Confidence. A finished character on the first try feels great.
Tracing also prepares kids for handwriting. The lines, curves and circles in a tracing page are the same strokes used in letters. See how tracing builds handwriting readiness.
What age should kids start tracing?
Most kids are ready around age 3, when they can hold a crayon and make a line on purpose. Start with thick, simple outlines and big shapes. By 4 and 5, kids can trace more detail. Many kids keep enjoying tracing well past 6, especially when they get to color what they traced.
How to do it well
- Pick a subject they love. A dinosaur gets more effort than a random shape.
- Use the right tool. A chunky crayon or triangular pencil for little hands, a regular pencil later.
- Go slowly. “Pretend your pencil is a snail.”
- Don’t worry about wobbles. Leaving the line is part of learning.
- Color it in. Coloring is the reward and builds control too.
- Then try it freehand. Offer a blank page: “Can you draw your own one?”
Is tracing cheating?
No. Artists have traced for centuries to learn shapes and practice lines. The worry is that kids will only trace and never draw on their own, but in practice tracing builds the confidence that makes freehand drawing possible. Read is tracing cheating? for the full answer.
Types of tracing activities
- Pre-writing lines: zigzags, waves and loops. See pre-writing strokes.
- Shape tracing: circles, squares, triangles.
- Letter tracing: a big help with the alphabet. See alphabet drawing activities.
- Character tracing: a whole cartoon animal or monster to trace, then color.
Moving from tracing to drawing
When tracing gets easy, it’s time for the next step. A step-by-step lesson lets kids draw on their own with a guide: on every How to Draw page, the finished drawing is shown as a light gray outline, and kids draw the black lines for each step. Many kids trace a character in a Trace Then Color book, then draw the same character in the matching How to Draw book. Our guide on how to help your child learn to draw explains the whole path.

Questions
What age is tracing good for?
From about age 3. Tracing stays useful through early elementary school, especially paired with coloring.
Does tracing help with handwriting?
Yes. Tracing practices the same lines and curves used in letters, and it builds pencil control and hand strength.
How long should a child trace each day?
Five to fifteen minutes is plenty for young kids. Stop while it is still fun.
When should my child move on from tracing?
When it feels easy. Try a step-by-step drawing lesson next, and keep tracing for calm, fun days.
