A free 36-week drawing curriculum

One school year of drawing, three short sessions a week. Kids start by tracing, learn to break characters into simple shapes, and finish the year copying drawings by grid. Every activity is free to print, and most have a video.

How it works

  • Two drawing days a week (15–20 minutes each): open the activity, print it or play the video.
  • A creative day to finish the week: write, remix or free draw.
  • Ages 5–10, with tracing pages for younger kids and grid pages for older ones.

You’ll need

  • Pencils, erasers, crayons or markers
  • A printer, or paper and a screen
  • A folder to keep every drawing: it’s fun to compare week 1 with week 36

Unit 1: Lines and confidence weeks 1–4

Skill focus: Pencil control: trace slowly, stay on the line, then color.

Unit 2: Shapes become characters weeks 5–8

Skill focus: See circles, ovals and rectangles inside every drawing.

Unit 3: Pets and farm animals weeks 9–12

Skill focus: Follow steps in order and check each step before the next.

Unit 4: Wild animals and the sea weeks 13–16

Skill focus: Big shapes first, small details last.

Unit 5: Dinosaurs weeks 17–20

Skill focus: Long necks, tails and spikes: draw the body, then add the parts.

Unit 6: Robots weeks 21–24

Skill focus: Straight lines, boxes and bolts: use a light hand, then go over the lines you keep.

Unit 7: Monsters and aliens weeks 25–28

Skill focus: Change one detail (eyes, teeth, horns) to invent a new character.

Unit 8: Fantasy and mashups weeks 29–32

Skill focus: Combine two ideas: a unicorn horn on a raccoon, a mermaid tail on a kitten.

Unit 9: Grid drawing and observation weeks 33–36

Skill focus: Look closely: copy one square at a time and compare as you go.
