In Their Shoes

It’s the new kid’s first day. Imagine how they feel and plan three ways to help.

empathy, perspective taking, planning kind actions

What kids do

“A new kid joins your class today. Step into their shoes.”

  1. Draw the new kid on their first morning
  2. They might feel…
  3. Three things I could do to help
  4. A time I was new somewhere, I felt…

How to run it

  • Read a short story about starting somewhere new first.
  • Kids can tick more than one feeling: mixed feelings are normal.
  • Swap the scenario: a new sibling, a new team, a new town.

Talk about it

  • Why might someone feel two things at once?
  • Which help idea is easiest to do tomorrow?
  • How can you tell how someone feels without asking?

Take it further

Make a welcome card the class can give the next new student.
