What kids do

“These four letters look alike. Read the tips, trace each row, then write it on the line below.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Trace each row. Then write the letters on the line below.

Teacher tip

Teach the bed trick: make fists with thumbs up, and the left hand is b and the right hand is d.

How to use it

  • Model each letter on the board, saying the strokes out loud (start at the top, pull down).
  • Have kids trace the letter in the air and on their palm before the pencil.
  • Keep a word wall or a word bank in reach so spelling does not stop the ideas.

Watch for

Letters started from the bottom. Gently redirect to top-down strokes before habits set.

Talk about it

  • Where does this letter start on the lines?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Practice the same letters in a tray of sand, salt or shaving cream.
