What kids do

“Copy each line of the poem in your neatest writing. Then draw the robot.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. My robot says beep.
  2. It rolls on the rug.
  3. It munches on bolts, then gives me a hug.

Teacher tip

Read the poem aloud together in a robot voice before kids start copying.

How to use it

  • Check pencil grip at the start, and keep the sheet tilted for comfort.
  • Keep sessions short: ten good minutes beats thirty tired ones.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Tight grips and sore hands. Try a pencil grip or a thicker pencil.

Talk about it

  • Which of your letters is your best one? Circle it.
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Write the letters with a wet sponge on a chalkboard.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
