What kids do

“Copy each sentence. Then check your writing like a teacher would.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Ducks quack by the pond.
  2. Kim has a blue kite.
  3. Jump high, little frog!
  4. I left finger spaces.
  5. My letters sit on the line.
  6. Tall letters touch the top line.
  7. I used capitals and end marks.
  8. Circle your neatest word. Write it here one more time.

Teacher tip

Model a self-check on your own writing with one honest mistake, so kids see it is about noticing, not being perfect.

How to use it

  • Check pencil grip at the start, and keep the sheet tilted for comfort.
  • Keep sessions short: ten good minutes beats thirty tired ones.
  • Let early writers draw first, then talk, then write.

Watch for

Tight grips and sore hands. Try a pencil grip or a thicker pencil.

Talk about it

  • Where does this letter start on the lines?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Write the letters with a wet sponge on a chalkboard.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
