What kids do

“Each letter has a big and a small partner. Trace the gray pairs, then write two pairs on your own.”

Teacher tip

Point out pairs that look alike (Cc, Kk) and pairs that look different (Aa, Gg).

How to use it

  • Model each letter on the board, saying the strokes out loud (start at the top, pull down).
  • Have kids trace the letter in the air and on their palm before the pencil.
  • Model the first answer on the board, thinking out loud as you write.

Watch for

Letters started from the bottom. Gently redirect to top-down strokes before habits set.

Talk about it

  • Which of your letters is your best one? Circle it.
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Practice the same letters in a tray of sand, salt or shaving cream.
