What kids do

“Split the word in two and draw it the silly way!”

  1. Draw each word the silly way
  2. Try: butterfly, hot dog, football, starfish, cupcake, rainbow
  3. Make up a new compound word and say what it means:

How to run it

  • Draw one together: “butterfly” = a stick of butter with wings.
  • Talk about what the word really means, too.
  • Collect class drawings in a silly dictionary.

Talk about it

  • Which word surprised you when you split it?
  • Do compound words always make sense?
  • Can you find one in a book today?

Take it further

Make a compound word guessing game: draw it, and a friend guesses.
