What kids do

“Ten bees are buzzing around. How many ways can you split them up?”

  1. ___ + ___ = 10
  2. ___ + ___ = 10
  3. ___ + ___ = 10
  4. ___ + ___ = 10
  5. Challenge: make 10 with three groups

How to run it

  • Draw quick shapes (dots, tiny bees) rather than detailed pictures.
  • Use two colors to show the two groups.
  • Counters help kids check.

Talk about it

  • How many ways did you find?
  • Is 3 + 7 the same as 7 + 3?
  • How do you know you found them all?

Take it further

Do the same for 20.
