What kids do

“Make a water xylophone! Which glass sings highest?”

  1. Glass 1
  2. Glass 2
  3. Glass 3
  4. Glass 4
  5. Glass 5
  6. Color the water level in each glass. Lowest sound to highest:
  7. More water makes the sound…
  8. A song I can play:

How to run it

  • Use glass jars or bottles and tap gently with a spoon.
  • Add a drop of food coloring so levels are easy to see.
  • Blowing across the top gives the opposite result, so try both!

Talk about it

  • Why does the water change the sound?
  • Where else do you hear high and low sounds?
  • Which animals make low sounds?

Take it further

Tune your glasses to play “Mary Had a Little Lamb”.
