What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. A realistic goal is a stretch, but you can really do it in the time you have. A goal that is not realistic is too big for the time, or it is out of your control.
  2. Circle Realistic or Not realistic for each goal.
  3. Read for 20 minutes every night this month.
  4. Become a famous singer by Friday.
  5. Learn to swim one length of the pool by summer.
  6. Grow three inches taller this week.
  7. Get my spelling words right on Friday by practicing every night.
  8. Read every book in the library this weekend.

Teacher tip

Talk about how a big dream can be broken into realistic goals.

How to use it

  • Check in on goals every Friday for a few minutes.
  • Let kids choose a school, home or fun goal.
  • Keep finished sheets in an SEL folder so kids can look back on their growth.

Watch for

Goals that are too big or too vague. Help kids make them specific.

Talk about it

  • What might get in the way, and what will you do then?
  • How might someone else see it differently?

Take it further

Hold a goal celebration when kids reach theirs.
