What kids do

“Read the pattern out loud. Write the next three numbers in the boxes.”

Teacher tip

Ask kids to say the rule in words, like “add 2 each time”, before writing the next three.

How to use it

  • Pair the sheet with real counters: build the number, then write it.
  • Use a fat crayon or a triangle pencil for kids who still grip with a fist.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reversals of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are normal at this age. Point to the start dot and model again rather than marking it wrong.

Talk about it

  • Where does this number start, at the top or the bottom?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a class number book: each child draws a page for one number.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
