What kids do

“Some numbers are backwards! Put an X on each backwards number. How many did you find?”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. How many backwards numbers did you find?

Teacher tip

Ask kids who reverse numbers to check each one against a number line. It is great practice in noticing.

How to use it

  • Use a fat crayon or a triangle pencil for kids who still grip with a fist.
  • Model each number in the air first, saying the stroke out loud: “Down, and around.”
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who form numbers from the bottom up. Catch it early, before the habit sets.

Talk about it

  • How many more would make ten?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a class number book: each child draws a page for one number.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
