What kids do

“Count the dots on the die. Write the number in the box. Then write it three more times.”

Teacher tip

Turn it into a real game with dice afterward: roll, say it, write it.

How to use it

  • Let kids trace with a finger before a pencil, so they feel the starting point.
  • Pair the sheet with real counters: build the number, then write it.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reversals of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are normal at this age. Point to the start dot and model again rather than marking it wrong.

Talk about it

  • Can you find this number somewhere in the classroom?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Write the numbers in sand, shaving cream or playdough, then back on paper.
