What kids do

“Look at the number in the star. Circle it every time you see it in the row. How many did you find?”

Teacher tip

Look-alikes like 6 and 9 trip kids up. Ask them to point to the number in the star every few circles.

How to use it

  • Model each number in the air first, saying the stroke out loud: “Down, and around.”
  • Slide the sheet into a page protector and use dry-erase markers for daily practice.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who form numbers from the bottom up. Catch it early, before the habit sets.

Talk about it

  • Which numbers look a bit alike? How can you tell them apart?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Hunt for numbers in a picture book, on a calendar or on the classroom clock and tally how many you find.
