What kids do

“Read the number word. Draw that many dots. Write the number.”

Words on this sheet

seventhreeeightninesixonetwotenfourfive

Teacher tip

Ask kids to draw the dots in ten frame rows of five so they can check them at a glance.

How to use it

  • Slide the sheet into a page protector and use dry-erase markers for daily practice.
  • Let kids trace with a finger before a pencil, so they feel the starting point.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reversals of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are normal at this age. Point to the start dot and model again rather than marking it wrong.

Talk about it

  • Where does this number start, at the top or the bottom?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Hunt for numbers in a picture book, on a calendar or on the classroom clock and tally how many you find.
