Hybrid animals: why animal mashups spark creativity

Half shark, half octopus. Half cat, half unicorn. Animal mash-ups are the easiest way into inventing.

By Kevin Coulston, cartoonist and author of the FirstArtBooks drawing books

Hybrid animals (two animals combined into one) are a great creative drawing activity because they give kids a clear starting point and endless possibilities. A shark with octopus legs, a cat with butterfly wings: kids practice drawing real animal parts while inventing something new. Here’s how to do it, with 30 ideas.

Why mash-ups spark creativity

Creativity often means combining things in new ways. Mash-ups make that concrete: take two things you know and put them together. Kids don’t have to invent from nothing, so they feel free to play. And because the creature doesn’t exist, nothing they draw is “wrong.”

How to draw a hybrid animal

  1. Pick two animals.
  2. Choose which parts come from each. Head from one, body from the other, or swap legs, tails and wings.
  3. Start with the biggest shape. Usually the body.
  4. Add the parts. Draw lightly first.
  5. Name it. A “shartopus,” a “catterfly.”
  6. Give it a habitat. Where does it live? What does it eat?
