100th day of school art activities

The 100th day is a math celebration, but it’s also a great day for art. Here are ideas that mix both.

By Kevin Coulston, cartoonist and author of the FirstArtBooks drawing books

Popular 100th day of school art activities include drawing yourself at 100 years old, making a creature from 100 dots or stickers, creating 10-by-10 grid art, and drawing 100 tiny things on one page. They mix counting and creativity, work for kindergarten through second grade, and make a fun hallway display.

Draw yourself at 100

The classic. Kids draw themselves as a 100-year-old: wrinkles, glasses, gray hair, a cane, a walker or a rocket-powered wheelchair. It’s a great lesson in changing a face. See cartoon expressions for kids and the funny faces hub for silly face ideas. Add a sentence: “When I am 100, I will...”

10-by-10 grid art

Draw or print a 10-by-10 grid (100 squares). Kids color squares to make a picture, like pixel art. Older kids can copy a simple cartoon square by square. It’s a natural fit for grid drawing. See what is grid drawing?, pixel art for kids and grid drawing and math.

A 100-dot monster

Give each child 100 dot stickers (or they draw 100 dots, counting in tens). Then they turn the dots into a monster: eyes, spots, teeth, scales. See monster drawing ideas.

100 things on a page

Fold a page into 10 boxes and draw 10 things in each: 10 stars, 10 fish, 10 hearts. That’s 100 drawings, and great counting practice.

Make 100 out of art

  • Turn the digits 1, 0, 0 into characters: the 1 is a robot, the zeros are googly eyes.
  • Draw a “100” monster whose zeros are its eyes.
  • Write 100 in bubble letters and fill it with patterns.

The 100-step challenge

For older students, have them draw a character in steps and count the lines they add. Can they make a drawing with exactly 100 lines? It’s harder than it sounds, and a fun way to think about how a step-by-step drawing is built. See how a How to Draw page works.

Classroom display

Hang all the “me at 100” drawings in the hallway with a sign: “Look how old we got!” Or make a class book of 100 drawings, one page per child.

Pair it with writing

  • “With $100 I would buy...”
  • “I could eat 100...”
  • “100 years ago, kids...”

See draw then write prompts.

Tip: Keep the “me at 100” drawings and give them back at the end of the year. Kids love seeing how they imagined themselves.

The book that helps

Draw by Grid turns counting squares into art, and Silly Faces is perfect for the classic “me at 100 years old” drawing.
