Homemade valentines beat store-bought every time. Here are easy, sweet and silly ideas kids can draw.

By Kevin Coulston, cartoonist and author of the FirstArtBooks drawing books

Easy Valentine’s Day drawing activities for kids include homemade cards, turning hearts into characters, drawing cute animal valentines with puns, and making kindness drawings for friends and family. Homemade valentines are personal, cost almost nothing and teach kids that their art can make someone smile.

Homemade valentine cards

  1. Fold paper or card in half.
  2. Draw a cute animal or character on the front.
  3. Add a pun: “You’re purr-fect,” “I like you a ton” (an elephant), “You’re dino-mite.”
  4. Sign it inside.

Cute animals are perfect for valentines. Learn a few step by step in the How to Draw books, where every step shows the complete drawing as a light gray outline so kids can see where each black line goes.

Heart characters

Hearts make great bodies. Draw a big heart and add eyes, arms, legs and a mouth. Try:

  • A heart superhero with a cape.
  • A heart monster with fangs.
  • A sleepy heart in pajamas.
  • A heart robot with antennae.
  • A heart family: big heart, little hearts.

It’s a fun way to practice drawing with shapes.

Animal pun valentines

  • Cat: “You’re purr-fect.”
  • Bee: “Bee mine.”
  • Owl: “Owl always love you.”
  • Dinosaur: “You’re dino-mite.”
  • Octopus: “I want to hold your hand, hand, hand...”
  • Pig: “Hogs and kisses.”
  • Monster: “You’re monstrously awesome.”

Kindness drawings

Valentine’s Day is about love in all its forms. Ask kids to draw something kind for someone: a drawing for a grandparent, a “thank you” for a teacher, a picture for a neighbor. See turn kids’ art into gifts.

Classroom valentines

  • Have kids draw one character, then photocopy it so they have enough cards for the class.
  • Set up an art center with heart templates, markers and stickers. See art center ideas.
  • Decorate a valentine mailbox with drawings.

For little ones

Kids aged 3 and up can trace and color a cute animal, then add hearts around it. See tracing for kids.

For older kids

Tweens might enjoy a valentine comic, a “best friends” character sheet or a Draw by Grid animal as a carefully finished card. See drawing for tweens.

Tip: Keep a stack of folded blank cards in the art corner all year. When a kid wants to thank someone, the card is ready.

The book that helps

Cute and baby animals make the sweetest valentines. These books teach dozens of them in the formats for ages 3 and up.
