What kids do

“Capital letters touch the top line. Trace the gray letters, then write one on your own.”

Teacher tip

Remind kids every capital starts at the top line and touches the bottom line.

How to use it

  • Model each letter on the board, saying the strokes out loud (start at the top, pull down).
  • Have kids trace the letter in the air and on their palm before the pencil.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Letters started from the bottom. Gently redirect to top-down strokes before habits set.

Talk about it

  • Which letter was the trickiest? Why?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Practice the same letters in a tray of sand, salt or shaving cream.
