What kids do

“Copy each sentence in your neatest writing. Leave a finger space between words.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Six pigs jump in mud.
  2. A zebra plays drums.
  3. Five fox kits nap.
  4. We wave at the yak.

Teacher tip

Have kids put a finger down after each word before they write the next one.

How to use it

  • Model each letter on the board, saying the strokes out loud (start at the top, pull down).
  • Have kids trace the letter in the air and on their palm before the pencil.
  • Let early writers draw first, then talk, then write.

Watch for

Letters started from the bottom. Gently redirect to top-down strokes before habits set.

Talk about it

  • Which of your letters is your best one? Circle it.
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Practice the same letters in a tray of sand, salt or shaving cream.
