What kids do

“Tall letters touch the top line. Small letters fit under the dashed line. Tail letters hang below the bottom line. Sort the letters.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Trace each row. Then write the letters on the line below.

Teacher tip

Use body motions: hands up high for tall letters, on hips for small letters, touch toes for tail letters.

How to use it

  • Check pencil grip at the start, and keep the sheet tilted for comfort.
  • Keep sessions short: ten good minutes beats thirty tired ones.
  • Give a minute at the end to reread the work out loud to a partner.

Watch for

Tight grips and sore hands. Try a pencil grip or a thicker pencil.

Talk about it

  • Where does this letter start on the lines?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Write the letters with a wet sponge on a chalkboard.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
