Teacher tip

Pass objects around the room and have kids say “That is mine” or “That is hers.”

How to use it

  • Review the part of speech with three quick examples on the board first.
  • Act out verbs and adverbs, and hold up objects for nouns and adjectives.
  • Keep a word wall or a word bank in reach so spelling does not stop the ideas.

Watch for

Kids sorting by meaning instead of job in the sentence. Ask what the word is doing.

Talk about it

  • Can a word be a noun in one sentence and a verb in another?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Play a silly fill-in-the-blank story game with nouns, verbs and adjectives.
