What kids do

“These letters all start with a magic c. Start at the top, curve back around, then finish the letter. Trace each row.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Start just under the dashed line. Curve up, back and around like a c.
  2. For a, d, g and q, go back up and add a line. For o, close the circle.
  3. Trace each row. Then write the letters on the line below.

Teacher tip

Have kids trace a big c in the air first. Every magic c letter starts with that same curve.

How to use it

  • Model each letter on the board, saying the strokes out loud (start at the top, pull down).
  • Have kids trace the letter in the air and on their palm before the pencil.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Letters started from the bottom. Gently redirect to top-down strokes before habits set.

Talk about it

  • Where does this letter start on the lines?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Practice the same letters in a tray of sand, salt or shaving cream.
