What kids do

“Fix one sentence each day. Look for capital letters, end marks, commas and periods in names. Rewrite it the right way.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1. on monday we went to the park
  2. 2. can sam come to my house
  3. 3. i was born in may
  4. 4. my teacher is mrs garcia
  5. 5. wow that was a huge wave

Teacher tip

Do one sentence a day as a warm-up, then go over it together before the lesson.

How to use it

  • Show one mistake-filled sentence on the board and fix it together first.
  • Have kids read each sentence aloud to hear where the pauses and stops go.
  • Keep a word wall or a word bank in reach so spelling does not stop the ideas.

Watch for

Capitals sprinkled in the middle of words. Review when a capital is needed.

Talk about it

  • Why does this word need a capital letter?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Start the day with one fix-it sentence on the board all week.
