What kids do

“Address an envelope to a friend or family member. Use capital letters for names and places, and a comma between the city and the state.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Top left: your name and address (the return address).
  2. Middle: the name and address of the person getting it.
  3. Top right: the stamp. · Example: Ms. Ana Lopez / 12 Pine Road / Springfield, IL 62701
  4. Who did you write to? What will you tell them in your letter?

Teacher tip

Bring in real envelopes and have kids address one to a family member to mail home.

How to use it

  • Use a colored pencil for every fix so the edits stand out.
  • Post an anchor chart of the rule where kids can see it while they work.
  • Let early writers draw first, then talk, then write.

Watch for

Kids who fix the sheet but not their own writing. Connect the rule to the next writing task.

Talk about it

  • Why does this word need a capital letter?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Have kids edit one paragraph of their own writing for this rule only.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
