What kids do

“The names of holidays start with capital letters. Rewrite each sentence with the holiday capitalized.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Small words like of stay small: the Fourth of July. The word birthday is not a holiday name.
  2. 1. We eat turkey on thanksgiving.
  3. 2. My birthday is on valentine’s day.
  4. 3. We watch fireworks on the fourth of july.
  5. 4. Grandma lights candles for hanukkah.
  6. 5. There is no school on labor day.
  7. 6. We plant a tree on earth day.
  8. 7. Kids dress up for halloween.

Teacher tip

Have kids name a holiday their family celebrates and write it with capitals as a warm-up.

How to use it

  • Show one mistake-filled sentence on the board and fix it together first.
  • Have kids read each sentence aloud to hear where the pauses and stops go.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Capitals sprinkled in the middle of words. Review when a capital is needed.

Talk about it

  • Which mistake was the hardest to spot?
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Start the day with one fix-it sentence on the board all week.
