What kids do

“A colon goes between the hour and the minutes, like 7:30. Write each time with numbers and a colon.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 2. half past three
  2. 3. a quarter past nine
  3. 5. twelve o’clock
  4. 8. a quarter to eight
  5. What time does school start? Write it in a sentence with a colon.

Teacher tip

Show a digital clock and talk about how the colon splits hours from minutes.

How to use it

  • Show one mistake-filled sentence on the board and fix it together first.
  • Have kids read each sentence aloud to hear where the pauses and stops go.
  • Let early writers draw first, then talk, then write.

Watch for

Capitals sprinkled in the middle of words. Review when a capital is needed.

Talk about it

  • How does the punctuation change the way you read it?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Start the day with one fix-it sentence on the board all week.
