What kids do

“Names of cities, states, countries, streets, lakes, rivers and parks start with capital letters. Rewrite each sentence.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. We swam in lake erie. → We swam in Lake Erie.
  2. 1. We drove to chicago.
  3. 2. My aunt lives in texas.
  4. 3. The bus goes down maple street.
  5. 4. I want to visit japan.
  6. 5. We hiked in yellowstone national park.
  7. 6. The pyramids are in egypt.
  8. 7. We crossed the mississippi river.

Teacher tip

Use a local map to find a real street, park and river near school and write them with capitals.

How to use it

  • Use a colored pencil for every fix so the edits stand out.
  • Post an anchor chart of the rule where kids can see it while they work.
  • Give a minute at the end to reread the work out loud to a partner.

Watch for

Kids who fix the sheet but not their own writing. Connect the rule to the next writing task.

Talk about it

  • Why does this word need a capital letter?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Have kids edit one paragraph of their own writing for this rule only.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
