What kids do

“Names of people, places, days, months and holidays start with a capital letter. Write each sentence correctly.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1. my birthday is in july.
  2. 2. we have art on tuesday.
  3. 3. aunt rosa lives in chicago.
  4. 4. thanksgiving is in november.
  5. 5. on monday, ella read a book about mars.
  6. 6. our class visited the brooklyn bridge.

Teacher tip

Have kids write their own name, birthday month and favorite day with capitals as a warm-up.

How to use it

  • Show one mistake-filled sentence on the board and fix it together first.
  • Have kids read each sentence aloud to hear where the pauses and stops go.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Capitals sprinkled in the middle of words. Review when a capital is needed.

Talk about it

  • How does the punctuation change the way you read it?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Start the day with one fix-it sentence on the board all week.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
