What kids do

“Same drawing, two moods. Use only warm colors on one and only cool colors on the other.”

  1. Warm: reds, oranges, yellows
  2. Cool: blues, greens, purples
  3. The warm one feels like…
  4. The cool one feels like…

How to run it

  • Sort the crayons into a warm pile and a cool pile first.
  • Keep the picture simple so there is time to color both.
  • Hold them side by side and ask the class which is which.

Talk about it

  • Which one looks like summer? Which looks like night?
  • Is green warm or cool? Can it be both?
  • Which one would you hang in your room?

Take it further

Draw a hot desert in cool colors and a snowy hill in warm colors. Does it still work?
