Kids practice
patterns (ab, aab, abc), predicting, explaining a rule

What kids do

“What comes next? Keep each pattern marching!”

  1. Make your own pattern parade (use faces, food or animals!)
  2. My pattern rule is…

How to run it

  • Clap or stomp the patterns out loud first.
  • Ask kids to say the rule: “circle, triangle, repeat.”
  • Use colored pencils to make color patterns, too.

Talk about it

  • How did you know what came next?
  • Where do you see patterns in the classroom?
  • Can a pattern have four parts?

Take it further

Make a pattern necklace with beads or pasta.
