What kids do

“Pick a place or a season. What do you see, hear, smell, taste and feel?”

  1. My topic (a beach, winter, the cafeteria…):
  2. One line for each sense
  3. Draw your poem

How to run it

  • Bring in something to smell or taste for a warm-up, if allowed.
  • Push past “I see a tree” to “I see a tree waving its arms.”
  • Read the poems aloud with the drawings held up.

Talk about it

  • Which sense was hardest to write about?
  • Which line makes you feel like you’re there?
  • How does a drawing show a smell or a sound?

Take it further

Write a second poem about the same place at a different time of day.
