What kids do

“Read the time in words. Write it with numbers, like 4:20.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1 twenty past one
  2. 2 twenty-five past five
  3. 3 twenty to twelve
  4. 6 quarter past seven
  5. 7 twenty to four
  6. 8 twenty past three
  7. 9 five past eight
  8. 10 quarter to twelve

Teacher tip

Teach “past” for the right side of the clock and “to” for the left side.

How to use it

  • Keep a geared demo clock at the front and model each type of problem.
  • Color the hour hand and the minute hand differently on the first two clocks.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reading the hour hand as the next hour when it is just before it, like 2:50 read as 3:50.

Talk about it

  • How long until lunch? How did you work it out?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a paper plate clock with brads for the hands.
