What kids do

“Read the end time. Count back the time it took. Write the start time.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. It took 30 minutes.
  2. 1 hour 30 minutes.
  3. It took 50 minutes.
  4. It took 40 minutes.
  5. It took 1 hour.

Teacher tip

Ask kids to count back the hours first, then the minutes.

How to use it

  • Keep a geared demo clock at the front and model each type of problem.
  • Color the hour hand and the minute hand differently on the first two clocks.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reading the hour hand as the next hour when it is just before it, like 2:50 read as 3:50.

Talk about it

  • How do you know which hand is the hour hand?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play “What time is it, Mr. Wolf?” with real clock times.
