What kids do

“Look at the short hour hand. The long minute hand points to 12. Write the time.”

Teacher tip

The minute hand is always on 12 here, so all the attention goes to the short hand. Good for a first clock lesson.

How to use it

  • Keep a geared demo clock at the front and model each type of problem.
  • Color the hour hand and the minute hand differently on the first two clocks.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reading the hour hand as the next hour when it is just before it, like 2:50 read as 3:50.

Talk about it

  • How do you know which hand is the hour hand?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Ask kids to record the time of five things they do after school.
