What kids do

“Draw the hour hand and the minute hand. Count by fives, then by ones.”

Teacher tip

Ask kids to label the fives around one clock and use it as a guide for the rest.

How to use it

  • Count by fives around the clock together before kids start.
  • Connect it to your real schedule: what time is lunch, recess, the bus?
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Counting minutes by ones from the 12 instead of by fives.

Talk about it

  • Where does the hour hand point at half past?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a paper plate clock with brads for the hands.
