What kids do

“Trace each number, then write it on your own. Color that many boxes in the ten frame.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Color one box in the ten frame for each one you count.

Teacher tip

The ten frame on this sheet shows how many more each number needs to make 10. Ask “How many empty boxes?” on every row.

How to use it

  • Let kids trace with a finger before a pencil, so they feel the starting point.
  • Pair the sheet with real counters: build the number, then write it.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who form numbers from the bottom up. Catch it early, before the habit sets.

Talk about it

  • Which numbers look a bit alike? How can you tell them apart?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Write the numbers in sand, shaving cream or playdough, then back on paper.
