What kids do

“Trace each number, then write it on your own. Color that many boxes in the ten frame.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Color nothing for 0, and one box in the ten frame for each one you count.

Teacher tip

Start with zero as a big round “egg”. Kids who color the ten frame first and then trace see that each number is an amount, not just a shape.

How to use it

  • Model each number in the air first, saying the stroke out loud: “Down, and around.”
  • Slide the sheet into a page protector and use dry-erase markers for daily practice.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reversals of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are normal at this age. Point to the start dot and model again rather than marking it wrong.

Talk about it

  • Where does this number start, at the top or the bottom?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Hunt for numbers in a picture book, on a calendar or on the classroom clock and tally how many you find.
