What kids do

“Trace the gray numbers. Then write the number two times on your own.”

Teacher tip

Say each teen number as “ten and some more” while kids trace. It helps with 13 versus 31 mix-ups later.

How to use it

  • Use a fat crayon or a triangle pencil for kids who still grip with a fist.
  • Model each number in the air first, saying the stroke out loud: “Down, and around.”
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Reversals of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are normal at this age. Point to the start dot and model again rather than marking it wrong.

Talk about it

  • Can you find this number somewhere in the classroom?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a class number book: each child draws a page for one number.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
