What kids do

“Same bottom number? Compare the tops. Same top number? The bigger bottom number makes smaller pieces!”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Least means smallest. Write the smallest fraction first.

Teacher tip

Keep fraction strips on the table so kids can check each set.

How to use it

  • Fold a paper strip into halves, fourths and eighths before the sheet so kids can see the pieces.
  • Keep fraction strips or fraction circles on each table.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Comparing fractions by the bottom number alone. Go back to the bars and look at the size of the pieces.

Talk about it

  • What does the bottom number tell you? And the top number?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Cut sandwiches or paper pizzas into equal parts and write the fractions.
