What kids do

“Find a number that divides the top and the bottom. Keep going until you can’t divide any more.”

Teacher tip

Ask kids to find the biggest number that divides both, but accept repeated small steps.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to say each fraction out loud as “3 out of 4 equal parts.”
  • Shade lightly with colored pencil so mistakes are easy to fix.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Adding the denominators (1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8). Draw it to show the pieces stay fourths.

Talk about it

  • Why is 1/8 smaller than 1/4 when 8 is bigger than 4?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?
