What kids do

“Make the denominators the same. Then add or subtract the numerators. Simplify your answer.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write every answer in simplest form. Use the whole number box for a mixed number.

Teacher tip

List the multiples of each denominator side by side to find a common one.

How to use it

  • Fold a paper strip into halves, fourths and eighths before the sheet so kids can see the pieces.
  • Keep fraction strips or fraction circles on each table.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Comparing fractions by the bottom number alone. Go back to the bars and look at the size of the pieces.

Talk about it

  • What does the bottom number tell you? And the top number?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?
