What kids do

“Add or subtract the fractions, then the whole numbers. Regroup a whole if you need to.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write every answer in simplest form. Use the whole number box for a mixed number.

Teacher tip

Ask kids to estimate with the whole numbers first so they can check their answers.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to say each fraction out loud as “3 out of 4 equal parts.”
  • Shade lightly with colored pencil so mistakes are easy to fix.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Adding the denominators (1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8). Draw it to show the pieces stay fourths.

Talk about it

  • Where do you use fractions at home, like in a recipe or a pizza?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Cut sandwiches or paper pizzas into equal parts and write the fractions.
