What kids do

“Start at the first number. Jump the tens, then the ones. Write where you land.”

Teacher tip

Kids can jump in any size chunks. Celebrate different paths that land in the same spot.

How to use it

  • Warm up with two minutes of facts out loud before kids start.
  • Ask kids to circle the problems they are sure of first, then go back to the tricky ones.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Columns that drift. Turn lined paper sideways or use graph paper to keep digits lined up.

Talk about it

  • How can an addition fact help you solve a subtraction fact?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Have kids make their own fact family triangles for a partner to solve.
