What kids do

“Add or subtract. Start with the ones. Regroup when you need to!”

Teacher tip

Graph paper or a lined sheet turned sideways keeps the four columns straight.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to circle the problems they are sure of first, then go back to the tricky ones.
  • Keep a number line or hundred chart taped to the desk for kids who need it.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in each column (54 − 27 = 33). Ask kids to say “Can I take 7 from 4?” before they write.

Talk about it

  • Which strategy did you use: counting on, making ten or a doubles fact?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Have kids make their own fact family triangles for a partner to solve.
