What kids do

“How many equal parts? How many are shaded? Write the fraction.”

Teacher tip

Ask kids to count the total parts first and write that number on the bottom. Then count the shaded ones for the top.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to say each fraction out loud as “3 out of 4 equal parts.”
  • Shade lightly with colored pencil so mistakes are easy to fix.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Adding the denominators (1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8). Draw it to show the pieces stay fourths.

Talk about it

  • Why is 1/8 smaller than 1/4 when 8 is bigger than 4?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a class fraction wall poster from paper strips.
