What kids do

“Shade each fraction bar. Write <, > or = in the circle.”

Teacher tip

Shading both bars before deciding is the whole point. Insist on it even if kids think they know.

How to use it

  • Fold a paper strip into halves, fourths and eighths before the sheet so kids can see the pieces.
  • Keep fraction strips or fraction circles on each table.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Comparing fractions by the bottom number alone. Go back to the bars and look at the size of the pieces.

Talk about it

  • What does the bottom number tell you? And the top number?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Make a class fraction wall poster from paper strips.
