What kids do

“Use the fraction wall. Fill in the missing number so the fractions are equal.”

Teacher tip

Have kids lay a ruler straight down the fraction wall to find equal lengths. It turns a rule into something they can see.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to say each fraction out loud as “3 out of 4 equal parts.”
  • Shade lightly with colored pencil so mistakes are easy to fix.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Adding the denominators (1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8). Draw it to show the pieces stay fourths.

Talk about it

  • Why is 1/8 smaller than 1/4 when 8 is bigger than 4?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Cut sandwiches or paper pizzas into equal parts and write the fractions.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
