What kids do

“Multiply. Use a fact you know to help with one you don’t!”

Teacher tip

Teach one trick before the sheet, like the 9s finger trick or doubling the 4s to get the 8s.

How to use it

  • Keep a multiplication chart available at first and take it away as kids get faster.
  • Start with two minutes of skip counting out loud for the tables on the sheet.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Lost place value in the second partial product. Remind kids to write the zero first.

Talk about it

  • How can 5 × 6 help you with 6 × 6?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Look for multiplication in the room: windows in rows, egg cartons, desk groups.
